Ads and Cartoons
For this week, around September 12-16, 2022, we dissected Nike and Apple ads. For most of the lessons so far, we have been studying images, which may contain humans, or even nonhuman things like objects or animals. Objects and animals may often be used as symbols of an ideal or a statement about the world. They are often found in these ads I mentioned, or in cartoons. For example, in a group work I missed, my classmates discussed how the dragon in an editorial cartoon with a princess represented making peace with the ideas you consider opposing or with people you regard as enemies. These ideas and representations connect us to people outside our communities by showing us the universal issues relevant to all of us. Ultimately, I learned that no matter how simple or absurd it may seem, we all have similar experiences as human beings. This is called the human condition. Therefore, the human condition is varied and we must show emphathy and collaboration with each other.
